"I chose to surround myself with positive, happy people because I was determined to beat this disease," she says. Kathy underwent a lumpectomy, followed by chemotherapy and radiation treatments, and remained cancer-free for twelve years. Then in 2002, she was diagnosed with another type of breast cancer. "I put on the survivor-mode hat and was determined to press on," Kathy says. "I think the pinktogether.com web site is a phenomenal tool for people who are just diagnosed and looking for a place to go," she says. To provide hope for others, Kathy posted her story and invited people affected by breast cancer to visit the site. "I want people to feel hopeful, that they are not alone— that there are many survivors pulling for them." Kathy has also become a resource for breast cancer patients and survivors by turning her own frustration into the inspiration for her business. A year after her bilateral mastectomy, Kathy was trying to find a mastectomy swimsuit in preparation for her son’s wedding in Cancun. "This shouldn’t be that difficult. I can’t be the only woman who's having difficulty finding these things. Someday I'm going to have a facility where woman can go and find the things they need," says Kathy. After five years of envisioning her dream, Kathy's shop, Absolute Dignity, first opened its doors. At Absolute Dignity, women can find wigs, soft headwear, hats, lingerie and compression hosiery, including lymphedema sleeves, and of course, mastectomy swimwear. In addition, as a certified mastectomy fitter and a breast cancer survivor, Kathy is able to skillfully and compassionately assist women in a supportive and empowering way that provides her with great fulfillment. "I've never worked anywhere where you get hugged by every customer that walks out the door," Kathy says joyfully. Maya Maya At 27, Maya was diagnosed with breast cancer. Her reaction was to blame herself, questioning everything from the food she ate to her cell phone use. Then Maya focused on what she could do to beat the disease. "People are generous and loving and supportive, but there is nothing like somebody who is in the same spot as you, who can say, 'It's okay, it's gonna be okay,'" she says. Providing this kind of support and compassion is one of the reasons Maya originally posted her messages on Pink Together. "I want people to see my story and learn about my situation and realize there’s a way to heal. You have to fight. You fight and you win." Maya admits that accepting support was difficult initially. Accustomed to solving problems on her own, Maya quickly realized this was one situation she couldn’t remedy by herself. "Ask for what you need from others," says Maya. "Let them in. It actually enriches their lives as much as it does yours." Maya also advises those going through breast cancer treatment to be assertive and informed. Being a survivor has completely changed the way she deals with others. "It's restructured my place on the planet. I’ve been given the chance to stop this from happening to anybody else. I have a purpose."

The book is good and has a guide to which recipes work best for various side effects of chemo. This edition is sponsored by Susan B. Koman.I don't support this foundation or the American Cancer Society because of outrageous administrative cost. I support the Cancer Research Institute, which has been instrumental in funding physicians who have developed a therapy for boosting the immune system rather than traditional chemo. My husband is on a therapy that they developed. I would rather have had part of the money spent on the book go to them. The reason for the average rating is that I could not find many recipes that appealed to me as a caregiver for a person with cancer.
My brother Kris Ghosh thought of this book while a gyn oncology fellow. He always cared about his patients and their nutrition. It will be 2 years that he has passed. I will always be proud that he created this cookbook. I may be his sister, but I am also a gyn oncologist, and I have had many patients find helpful recipes in this book.
The book is beautiful, alot of pictures, which I like..............BUT this book which is ostensibly for cancer patients who are taking chemo and/or radiation, which leaves them with little or no energy. This book, while lovely, was written for people with plenty of energy to whip around the kitchen, doing alot of prep work, etc. Yes, I read through the book, especially noting the amount of preparation time and ingredients needed for each recipe. The prep times are extensive, many over 2 hours, plus you would have to be a gourmet cook to have all of the ingredients needed for the recipes and/or spend a great time going to the grocery store to purchase them fresh. It's a great cookbook, but just not for cancer patients, which is what it is supposed to be. Also I noted that most of the recipes are for many people. It would be nice if Betty Crocker would publish a cookbook, not only for people who really do not feel like cooking in the first place, but do not want to eat meals out of the frozen food section. It should also contain meals expressly for two people, which is the usually the case.
Anyone with cancer as well as their caregivers should have this book. My sister has cancer so I bought this book to help me take care of her, but this is a book I will use any time. The recipes are delicious and quick to prepare, and there is so much information about cancer that I bought an extra copy for my sister. She also loves the book. The book also contains a lot of positive ideas from other cancer patients, etc. Buy this!
a great cookbook for your family and especially for that special person, who is dealing with the treatment of cancer. You can fix some excellent meals for someone, who is currently or has gone through treatment and just too tired to fix for themselves.
Easy to read and use, with recipes, meal plans, medical discussion and emotional guides. Complete, friendly, accessible.
AFTER BEING TOLD I HAVE 2 TYPES OF CANCER, I WAS TOLD THAT I WOULD HAVE A HARD TIME WITH REGULAR FOOD. I WENT SEARCHING FOR A COOK BOOK WITH INFORMATION THAT COVERS MOST CANCERS. I FOUND IT IN THIS COOKBOOK.....BY BEING ABLE TO COMPARE BOTH TYPES OF CANCERS,WE ARE ABLE TO CHOOSE WHAT FOODS I CAN TOLERATE ON CERTAIN DAYS.I AM 1/2 WAY THRU MY CHEMO AND RADIATION TREATMENTS AND THE DR'S WERE RIGHT ABOUT THE FOODS BEING HARD TO SWALLOW, AND DIGEST....BUT WITH THIS COOKBOOK I HAVE A CHOICE....IF YOU OR A LOVE ONE HAS CANCER..............THIS SHOULD BE THE FIRST GIFT YOU GET OR GIVE.
This book has some great recipes for everyday cooking too. Fast shipping, great condition.
