From the Inside Flap

Each region of our country has developed a distinctive architectural style. So it is with the old Cracker homesteads of Florida, whose sagging porches and rusting roofs are eloquent testimonials to a lifestyle that responded to its environment rather than fighting it. In this visually delightful book, laced with quotations from one of the best chroniclers of Florida Cracker life, Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings, Ronald Haase takes us on an intimate tour of the utilitarian wooden structures constructed by early settlers in North Florida. These houses, raised high off the ground and surrounded by shady porches, responded both to the warm and sultry climate and to the very idea of living side by side with nature in such a beautiful environment. The technology with which they were built and the resulting modest but dignified forms reflected their rustic settings of tall pine scrub or hardwood hammock. Professor Haase traces the development of Cracker Architecture as it adapted to the changing lifestyles of Florida settlers throughout the 1800s.

Very architectural. Lot of plans and architect-type drawings and analysis. The result of field studies by architectural students and their professor(s). Valid as a way of preserving a particular piece of heritage. The designs and layouts as pointed out mainly came from further north, and these farmhouse/settler types have not in the main become a staple of Florida style. It's a long long long way from Miami Beach, but a true representation of 'cracker' heritage.

A great variety of photos and illustrations with fine appreciation for the style make this a book that does the job. Humble dwellings deserve the respect that Ronald Haase gives them and he recognized the simple functionality of these structures and extrapolates them for today's needs. I thoroughly enjoyed this book.

A native Floridian, I grew up with these houses and am fascinated with their style and utility. Dr. Haase has done an excellent job of describing the various types of houses and their construction. I just wish the book were longer and had more houses.

This book does a great job of describing and showing how the original Floridians lived. (Floridians--not natives). Great photo's and well-written. Great for preservationists, historians, architects, etc...

An excellent look at the evolution and design of a classic architectural style. There's no other book like this.

A complete and thorough description of a type of architecture and therefore the culture. This book was meaningful to me because of my southern heritage and I live in a cracker house. I didn't know it was a cracker house until I read the book. The author is fun and easy to read and the information is great.

My grandparents lived in a house similar to these in LaBelle, Florida. Brought back fond memories of a lost Florida.
