A good updated version with both illustrations and stories to go with the word's meaning. I highly reccommend it for any who likethe language or grew up around it as I did.
The updated content and commentary are good. The typographic design is horrible.Worth getting if you liked the original edition. Just be prepared to like the original edition more than this update.
A wonderfully written, informative book. Mr. Rosen's prose is perfect for the material. Every time I read it, I laugh out loud at one of the stories. It brings back fond memories of how my family and neighbors mixed Yiddish and English to create beautifully rich dialogues. One caveat. You don't have to be Jewish to enjoy the book, but it sure comes alive if you are.
A classic book. I've carried mine in rubber bands for decades now, and I was delighted to find that there was a new addition. Still couldn't toss the old one away, though.
I had an old paperback copy of the original volume. This new editions is just splendid, filled with just about everything a gentile might need to know about our Yiddish (Jewish) brothers and sisters. What an absolutely charming and informative tome this is, beautifully organized and edited. A must-have book if you love humor and diverse faith cultures.

Whether Yiddish is part of your life or just something that sounds interesting, you can curl up with Leo Rosten's book and simply soak up a culture that has given us so much life, vibrancy and joy... The New Joys of Yiddish is an somewhat expanded version of the original with just as much real information coupled with quintessential Yiddish humor. If you want to enjoy a fun time with or without a mastery of the yiddish language, this book is for you. I am in a Yiddish conversation group where those of us who speak well or not, enjoy leafing through this book.The definitions are breezy, the words alphabetically arranged and easy, therefore, to peruse at you leisure.In a time of despair over the shrinking of Yiddish speakers, at least the book contributes to keeping it alive and perhapsinspiring others to brush up their Yiddish.
