As a reader of more than a dozen Jodi Piccoult books, including some of my all-time favourite reads, I have to say this read was disappointing as it didn’t quite hit the emotion it aimed for.The book is told in reverse order. This diminished any mystery or intrigue that might have existed, had the story flowed chronologically. I actually considered not completing it, when it became obvious that this was a book about abortion. The topic itself is current and relevant, and I am certainly not averse to discussing and debating it, but addressing it in the way this story is pieced together made the characters surreal and distanced. I knew from the blurb, that a shooting at a women’s health clinic where abortions were being performed would take place. I did not, however, expect the entire book to be entirely about abortions. The novel is so focused on the issue and providing lots of information, that it often becomes a parched and detached almost scientific read, that resembles a research document.
I love Jodi Picult and always eagerly await her latest book. Unfortunately, A Spark of Light left me feeling a little bleh. It was well-researched as always. Maybe a little too much like a lecture at times. But, and I hate to say this, but it felt like she had printed off her manuscript, accidentally dropped it on the floor, and some of the page order got muddled up. It took a little while for me to realise that she was writing in reverse time order, but with the many characters, all their perspectives and different times in their lives within a chapter - it became a little confusing. It then became a book I had to read because I'd paid good money for it and because it was a Jodi Picoult, not a book I read because it was entertaining and I was gripped. But that's just my perspective. Also, the way it was written, the attempt at a twist fell flat because it was totally predictable. I wish I could be more positive, as I am a die-hard Picoult fan.
While the story was good, I constantly had to look back to find out who was who and how they came to the clinic. The problem for me was the layout of going back in time while jumping between characters and I also came across a few places where within each block of time characters would jump to a different time in their lives. I am an editor by profession so maybe these things can only be seen by a critical eye; at the same time, if I was this confused I can only imagine how confusing following the story would be to the very casual reader. The book did not sway me away from Jodi. I am still a dedicated fan. In this book I just felt like a complete outsider. I couldn’t identify with a single character on either side of the fence. I love Jodi’s books because I can empathize with characters on both sides in her stories. The relationships just didn’t beckon me in.Still love you Jodi. I can’t wait for the next book.
I waited with bated breath for this book to arrive. I’m a huge Picoult fan. The theme is always topical and well-researched and this one did not disappoint in these two areas. Trying to keep up with the many characters was one thing, but the jumping back and forth in time, as well as between characters, was a bridge too far for me. It definitely detracted from my overall enjoyment of this novel. I even considered starting from the beginning again to try and place who was who in the zoo. Her description of an abortion procedure was unexpectedly disturbing - I had never allowed myself to imagine the grim reality of it. That said, I enjoyed the exploration of close human relationships, communication and, of course, the right to choose.
I have read all of Jodi Picoults books and I thoroughly enjoyed the plot and twists of each novel. A spark of light however just did not measure up to my expectations. Whilst I love her style of writing, the structure of the novel from back to front just did not make sense. Things seemed repetitive and obvious to say in the least. I usually try and savor all the words of her books but this time round as I neared the middle I got bored and really could not wait for the end. Also there were plots that were developed but at the end were undeveloped, like what happened to Beth, or the nurse. Felt a bit incomplete.
It was a little different from the other Jodi Picoult books I've read. I found it a little stretched at times, but there where some surprises towards the end that make it worth investing in it till the last page
Read this book in one long weekend. Loved the depth to the characters and how they all intertwined. The moral struggles in the book had me questioning my own values. Again Jodi has taken a subject I thought I had a firm grip of and made it into an unpredictable piece of soap. Loved it!
I found the book just Ok. Not as good as the reviews.
