Non fiction isn't usually a "must read" for me, but I couldn't put this one down. The author does a great job of portraying the complexity of his early life and education; the moments when things went well or went badly; the good choices he made and the bad; and especially, the complex interactions between the "hope dealers", people who wanted him to succeed, and the people who very much wanted to hold him back. Even though the author's story is extraordinary, he conveyed hope for all the kids who are getting lost in our educational and justice systems, and I came away with a lot of great ideas of how I can "deal hope" to the young students in my life.
This excellent book portrays strength, tenacity, and the importance of a mother’s loving advocacy and relentless courage— her’s and his. The book begins with the author confronting inexplicable racism on the inner city streets—tragically, all too topical today. In his schooling, he struggled with ADHD and a learning disability, which were unaided by the educational systems. Fighing against the odds, today, Hasan Davis, is an influential leader, working within government to transform arcane government policies for youth. Read this book. Once I started reading it I could not put it down.
A wonderful yet sometimes sad story. Very encouraging for every young person of color or with disabilities. The main takeaway is that there is Hope.
Thought this book was well written. I know this author personally and have heard part of his story but was still in awe with what he had to overcome. It is really an inspiration to all youth who find themselves in the same situation. It also is an inspiration to those people working to help these kids to know their efforts are rewarded.
An inspirational must read book. I couldn't put it down until the last word. I can not wait for it to come out in hard back so I can purchase for gifts. Amazing what a wonderful man he turned out to be.
All teachers and all parents would do well to devour this immensely readable autobiography. This is a book long overdue. I cried and laughed out loud as I read his story, often simultaneously. Kudos, Hasan Davis, JD! Thank you for sharing your vital and timely life story with the world.
