Re-Zoom resumes, or more accurately, reprises, the layout and nothing-is-as-it-seems perspective of last season's Zoom. Featuring detailed drawings backpainted on animation cels, this text-free volume opens with a red-on-blue cave painting that, with the turn of a page, becomes a detail on a wristwatch. The next spread reveals that the watch belongs to a young man doing a rubbing of carved hieroglyphs... and so on. To surprise his audience, which may already expect the sequence of pictures to expand to infinity, as in Zoom, Banyai toys not only with spatial relations but with time and with cultural referents: people in 19th-century garb, admiring an image of Napoleon, turn out to be on a movie set; a woman in traditional Japanese dress sports a yellow Walkman. There are nods to the arts as well. A black-and-white Alfred Hitchcock and a blue bodhisattva sit astride a thundering elephant, and a dejected-looking Picasso rides the New York City subway. The finale-which leaves readers in a subway tunnel as the train's red taillights recede-may not be as mindbending as Zoom's outer-space flight, but is nonetheless a clever solution. All ages. Kindergarten-Grade 5?This remarkable companion to Zoom (Viking, 1995) is a visual journey, a cinematic picture book without words. Viewers are shown something that turns out to be just a piece of something larger, and thus not at all what they saw (or thought they saw) in the first place. With each page, one takes a step back to see the broader context. The image of an ancient archer is just a figure on a watch, the hand wearing the watch is making a rubbing in an Egyptian tomb, which turns out to be the Obelisk of Luxor in Paris, but not really because it's just a movie set...and on and on and on, until the final page, where the lights of a subway car disappear into a tunnel to become two eyes staring in the darkness?or so it appears. While not the most technically accomplished artist, Banyai makes up for it in originality, an assured sense of design and composition, and an avant-garde sensibility that children, especially older ones, will love. He mixes traditional and contemporary images in a sly way: for example, one picture shows a woman in traditional Japanese garb, wearing a walkman, looking right at viewers with a trace of a smile on her face. His is a truly global view, moving easily from Europe to Asia to the U.S. (although you never really know where you are). Children?small people in an adult-sized world?are often fascinated with size and perspective. Re-Zoom comments on that, on reality and illusion, on visual awareness, on all sorts of things. I purchased this book for a team building exercise that consisted 30 people. Watching the dynamics and how things played out was very insightful. From the way they determined how they needed to organize, to figuring out what they were looking at (remember you don’t tell them it’s a sequence). It can brought to light who emerged as a leader (even some we never suspected), how individuals that don’t work together had to communicate.It was very successful and everyone really enjoyed it. For our purposes, the take-always were that everyone works and processes information differently. we don’t always get it right the first time so it’s important to be patient and learn from it. And finally, that each person plays a role in the big picture; no matter how big or small, it’s a critical piece to the overall success of the entire team.

This is a cute book for kids- where the story is "told" in pictures that ZOOM out as the book progresses.This was used as a team-building activity in a teacher training, and I have since used it with my high school students in a similar fashion.If you remove the pages from the binder and give each student a page, instruct them to keep their "card" (page) to themselves and not show anyone else. They must describe their page to their classmates as they move around, asking questions of each other. They must figure out where they fit in with the other cards in the room. It builds questioning skills, problem-solving skills, tells you and them who will be the natural leaders in a group, and is a good way to get high school kids up and moving around the classroom. When they think they are in order, we have them reveal the pictures one-at-a-time, so they can see the story unfold. Sometimes they want to re-order themselves once they figure out it's a Zoom out progression. I love the book and the activity that someone has developed from it.

I have both books and posted this review in Rezoom as well.This is a gorgeous book; you can keep looking at the images for a long time and see new things. I actually use the book in class; I teach a subject that required a non-linear perspective, but rather I have to get the students to see things from a Macro to Micro perspective, not in a this happens then this happens. This book has been very successful in helping that process to occur. I actually disassemble the book, laminate the pages, and can adjust for it groups taking out some of the pages for the activity. I will not allow the students to show one another the pages, but instead, they have to describe what they think is important. Most students, based on how they have been taught to think, will describe the scene in terms of events of what is occurring, giving little emphasis to the detail of the images. Instead, about ten minutes in I let the students know that sometimes a story does not start where they think it starts; some cultures value emphasis on events or things over being linear. Then, after a bit more time, I let the students know the name of the book; which clues them in a little bit. Finally, I let the students show one another the pages, which they then put in order pretty quickly.It’s a great activity to teach perspective. A lot of times we are trained to see things a certain way, but not all people and cultures are that way. This book is great for that type of activity and lesson to teacher. It’d also work well with one’s own child, even trying to guess what happens next in the story.

Used this book recently for a corporate training gig with 30 people. It went really well and helped drive home a good point. I cut all the pages out and gave each person one. Without showing anybody else their picture, the group had to figure out what the order was.
